Description:
This beautiful chatelaine features a decorative belt hook which suspends a perfume vinaigrette, a notebook, a needle case, and a pencil. Chatelaines were most popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century, from 1870 to World War I. Victorian housewives clipped chatelaines to their belts and used them to carry useful household objects, since women’s clothing did not at that time have pockets. They are still popular and highly sought after for antiques collectors today. This Victorian piece features a 4” by 1.25” belt hook. The belt hook is masterfully crafted of sterling silver, and has a beautiful vintage patina. It has an embossed motif of ornate bows, curls and roses. The pin and C hook on the back are in good working condition. The piece is stamped “63 STERLING”. It holds four equally ornate sterling objects: a perfume vinaigrette, a notebook, a needle case, and a pencil.
The perfume vinaigrette is suspended on a 3.75” sterling rolo chain. The perfume bottle is embossed in the form of a mystical sea serpent. The exquisite detailing and style clearly illustrates the Art Nouveau era. This dark mythical figure is also made of sterling silver. It is in wonderful condition with a vintage luster. It measures 3.25” long and 1.5” wide.
The second item is a dance card or an “Aide Memoire” notebook, which was a necessity for every lady attending a party. The dance card continues in the delightful Art Nouveau style. While it matches the perfume vinaigrette in genre, the motif could not be more different! The card is embossed with cherubs, swirling leaves, flowers. The front is inscribed with elegant calligraphic initials “AOP”. It maintains three celluloid pages in beautiful condition. The back of the book is marked “STERLING 8” along with an engraved axe symbol. The book measures 3” by 1.75” and is attached by bezel to a 4” rolo chain.
The third item appears to be some sort of container, presumably for needles. It is embossed with a girl’s head, and an ornate grape vine pattern. The hallmark is identical to the one on the notebook. The needle case measures 2.5” long, .5” wide, and .17” thick. It hangs by a 3.5” chain.
The last item is a sterling pen-pencil. The pencil was always a staple for a Lady’s chatelaine. This dainty piece has an ornate Victorian rose and swirl pattern. It is 2.5” long and .2” in diameter. It is marked “STERLING” and hangs from 3.5” chain.
This chatelaine is in spectacular condition for its age. It probably dates 1890-1905. It is a beautiful piece of history, a celebration of Art Nouveau style, and a must have for every antique collection. Don’t miss out on this great find
