Description:
Vintage Art Nouveau Original Pen and Ink sketch drawn by artist/illustrator R.F. Outcault in 1904. Taken from a 1904 issue of the Burr-McIntosh Monthly- an exceptionally crafted art magazine featuring illustrators, painters and leading photographers of the day- this is a wonderful image which pokes gentle fun at the foibles of motoring when it was still a novelty.
Lovely image of a pretty young miss gleefully steering her car with cap flying and hair coming undone. There is a ditty underneath her which says;
Lamps in front and lamps beside,
Some are seen and some will hide,
Some are green but those of red,
Say " Clear the road or you'll be dead"
Where's the man who wouldn't stand,
In the mud or on the sand,
Till ground up in pieces fine,
Gazing in those lamps of thine?
R.F. Outcault is arguably one of the finest humorous illustrators of the Art Nouveau Era and most certainly cemented his place in American Pop Culture history by creating the infamous Yellow Kid, giving birth to the modern comic strip and creating the charming advertising icon, Buster Brown and his faithful pup Tige.
This pen and ink sketch is relatively rare, created just at the time when his career gained momentum by the creation of Buster Brown. Taken from a 1904 Burr-McIntosh the condition is crisp and white- three holes at the side are where the ribbon for the publication was wound in 1904. Exceptional image you will not run across again- probably only printed in the pages of the magazine. A fantastic gift for the collector of the unusual, motor related items, pretty-girl art or comics in general. Measures 7 x 12.
