In the Flutist, Berthon shows the strange ethereal sexuality which can be found in much of his work; never blatantly sexy, his women radiate a soft yielding glow that gives them a spiritual beauty. Note how a perfectly harmonious effect is created with only a few shades of muted yellows, greens and browns.
It has been said that Berthon "stands at the very center of interpetation of Art Nouveau grace and beauty". This is what is called a "panneau decoratif" - it includes no advertising and no letterpress. It was meant to stand alone as a significant work in its own right.
