Vintage Pietra Dura Inlaid Green Malachite Box, 20th C.
Description: Vintage Pietra Dura Inlaid Green Malachite Box, 20th C. Probably Russia. The rectangular box is comprised of six malachite slabs which have been joined together. The surface of the cover is inlaid with a circular reserve of depicting two stylized houses and a tree on a malachite chip ground below a black night sky with moon and stars within a bronze or brass band/rim. There are two malachite pieces attached to the underside of the cover (to keep the cover in place). The box is not signed/marked. Price Comparison: $800-1000 in Fine Art & Antiques Gallery. Dimensions: 4-7/8" Long, 3" Wide, 2" Deep. Weight: 1.1lbs. (17oz.) Condition: The natural gaps/imperfections to the surface of the malachite stone slabs are filled with a green filler/material. There are a few small chips/losses along the edges of the box and cover (the largest chip (to one corner of the cover) measures 3/8" long). Otherwise, the box is in good condition.
