Hat Pins were designed by noted artists, jewelers and silversmiths, and could be very ornate in their design and workmanship with gilt and faceted glass decoration. If the Hat Pin was of a longer length, it was meant to anchor an ornately styled hat. As hat styles diminished in size, so did the length of the Hat Pins.
