Description:
A rare + rarified find …
When Margot van Voorhies Carr closed her shop, Margot de Taxco, in 1948, she permitted a handful of her former silversmiths to continue to use some of her molds. The artisan who created this splendid enamel and silver pin, and hallmarked his work NAV, must have been one of those fortunate smiths. This charming and beautifully executed pin is not only a rarely seen Margot design, but is also marked with one of the inventory numbers that was used in her enamel and silver series. The piece depicts the back of a Mexican man, donned in sombrero and serape, standing next to a flowering prickly pear cactus. Slightly speckled, the enameling boasts a singular color palette of rich yellow, earthy brown, jade green, and deep red. It is a fabulous work, wonderful to wear and collect.
Hallmarks: NAV {inside circle}, MEXICO, STERLING {circle}; TA-114; 5809. Margot assigned numbers 5109 through 5922 to her enamels. TA-114 was the letter/number registration assigned to smith NAV. This mark is cited in Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks. Dimensions: 1-1/2” x 1-1/4” in diameter. Weight: 10.4 grams. Condition: Fine vintage condition, with a barely noticeable, but possible small repair to the enamel that may have occurred at the time of production {color match is perfect}.
