Description:
High on the wish list of many serious Madame Alexander collectors is a Beth doll from the legendary dollmaker's 1955 'Little Women' series. Featured on the cover of the 'Alexander-Kins for 1955' booklet, this beautiful blue-eyed brunette comes in an Alexander-Kins box with pink tissue, wearing original never-been-laundered clothes.
An 8-inch Wendy-type straight-legged walker marked ALEX on her back, Beth is in almost every respect just as she looked more than 50 years ago. Her shiny hair is unmussed, all garments are present (even nylons and little purse), her sleep eyes with molded lashes operate without a hitch and her skin color hasn't faded. (Beth, being the sick sister, was always on the pale side.) The only flaws we've found can be easily corrected: Her clothes could use dry-cleaning, the fabric strap on one her Mary Jane shoes has popped and her limbs are a bit loose with age. Her box, although of the right era, may not be hers; Beth's style number isn't shown in the brochure, so I can't make a positive match with the number on the box.
This exceptional doll is from an extensive one-owner collection, from which only Beth, a 1956 Lissy bridesmaid and a 1957 Cissette bride remain. All were carefully stored away around 1960 and only recently came to light again. As you know, the years 1948 to 1965 were the golden era for Madame Alexander dolls, when today's most prized examples were made.
