Description: Baby Bunting children's dishes have been around since Victorian times. The graphics from these earlier English dishes are picked up on this Homer Lauglin series of children's dishes. This dish I am offering has a wonderful graphic of Baby Bunting hoeing flowers while a brown & white dog stands near by. The lettering reads "Baby Bunting takes his hoe and tries to help the flowers grow." People describe this character as a girl because of the dress and apron, but boys in early time also wore dresses and thus the confusion. I love the red shoes and blue apron. The little dog also has a red bow around the neck. On the outside of the dish a gold band surrounds the top and another smaller one the middle. A funny startled cat with arched back is at the front side of the dish. The sides of the dish slant in and that makes the top 6.75 inches and the bottom 7.25 inches. It is approximately 1.5 inches tall. On the bottom is the Homer Laughlin logo and "Made in the USA" and the letters and numbers "C 5 N".

Many HCL pieces carry a backstamp containing a series of letters and numbers. The company has provided the information to help decipher these codes. "A change was made for the period of 1921 - 1930. The first letter was used to indicate the month of the year... The next single digit number was used to indicate the year, and the last figure for the plant." This dates the dish to March 1925 made at the Newell, W. Virginia plant. The condition is good with these issues to point out, graphics on the surface of the plate show very little wear or skips. Some light utensils marks are present as expected but not distracting. Wear to the gold lines is more noticeable in some spots on top line and only a few areas of second line. The graphic of the cat shows some wear especially a spot on the tail. There is general crazing over all of the dish and several very small tight hairlines on the inside. These may be only crazing lines that are darker. Only one line goes through to the outside. Glaze is thin in some spots on the white rim. This is an exceptional dish and you will be pleased with adding it to a collection or to give as a gift.
