Description:
Chelsea ship’s clocks are universally regarded as the best in the USA, and probably in the world. They have ridden our Navy ships into, and out of, battle since before 1900, and have been given by many of our US Presidents to visiting heads of state as gifts of some of our country’s finest work. The serial number on the clock (780xxx) dates this fine pair to the early 1970’s, and the one-of-a-kind (actually two-of-a-kind, eh?) shelf bases in curly maple and cypress are more recent. Condition is excellent. Clock is keeping perfect time, and striking the proper ship’s bells, and the barometer is also functioning perfectly. (Here’s a tip: to check out a barometer, hold it at ground level, tap the case, read the pressure. Then extend it above your head, tap and read again. A good barometer will register a change.) I have been told that these instruments were taken from a 52’ schooner being scrapped on the west coast, and the condition of the bronze cases seems to bear this out. The back of each case (where it would have been attached to a bulkhead) shows tarnish, grime, etc. There is no damage, however, and the bezels have been carefully buffed bright, and the rest of the case cleaned, but not buffed, which I’ll either leave for the new owner, or do at her/his request. Good vintage Chelsea clock and barometer pairs in this larger size are becoming a bit harder to find than they were only a year or two ago. The size, more impressive than the usual 5-inch Chelsea clocks, is considerably more scarce, and will become even rarer as these instruments find homes that may cherish them for years - or generations.
