Description: Jade. Foo lions always come in pairs: a male & female lion. These are heavy (6+#), massive pieces of Jade. Display stands included, but carvings can be used as bookends. Jade is Burmese in origin and Chinese carved. Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. These are not highly polished, but have a soft smooth velvety surface. The carving detail on the teeth, tongue, toes and mane are stylized. Expressions fierce. Felted bases. There are subtle variations between the two because they are hand carved. Each measures 6 inches high X 2.5 inches wide X 3.125 inches deep. Pair w/stands weigh 5#. Lions are not attached to the bases, but stand freely. Untreated A Jade. (Much of modern jade is enhanced with resin or artificially colored.)

HISTORY: Lion - Shi-Zi – "Foo Dog" or “Foo Lions” play a big part in Chinese folklore and are depicted looking more mythical than real. Pairs of stone lions rival even dragons in popularity as guardians in and of buildings and temples. It is one of the four animals of power and energy. Foo Lions come in pairs, a male and a female. The female traditionally has a kitten under her left paw, the male has a ball under the right paw.(Burmese jade is called “living jade”.)The Guardian Temple Lions have long held a mythological presence in Chinese folklore. They are said to be excellent guardians, rivaling dragons in tenacity. Even today they are still prominently used to guard homes and temples. Legend has it that these temple lions will keep the occupants of the home safe from any harm spiritual or otherwise. However many business tycoons ensure that they are placed outside their offices as well.
