Description:
1933 Vintage Deco Stunning Steichen Photo Page Joan Crawford and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Beautiful and Rare Amazing duo portrait of Hollywood chic and elegant power couple of the Pre-Code Deco Era, Douglas and Joan better known as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr and Joan Crawford. Taken from an issue of Vanity Fair Magazine this is an unusual, candid shot of this dazzling duo with Joan looking wistful and a trifle far-away. She was at a high point of popularity and talent at this point in her career- having completed Grand Hotel and Rain and just prior to working on Dancing Lady. Tony Vanity Fair had no problem poking some gentle fun at this wonderful couple- referring to Crawford in the following manner. " For her part, Mrs. Fairbanks, Jr., once a flibberti-gibbet dancing girl, now a leading exponent of the Oh-God- the-pain-of-it school, will appear as an English ambulance driver in Today we Live, from the bitter pen of Mr. William Faulkner." Mr Fairbanks is described as being "one of the promising juveniles of the silver screen for several years now, yet his annual output continues undiminished in both quantity and quality. In his next film, The Sucker, he expounds his virility in the role of a young prizefighter, opposite the whipped-cream Loretta Young." This is a wonderful image of the two, at the height of their beauty and glamour. Steichen has captured something rare for Joan, a moment where she looks fragile and delicate. This image is uncommon and was most likely never reproduced. Vanity Fair was a notable arbiter of taste dabbling in all aspects of the arts, society, fashion and politics at the time- this is some of Steichen's finest portrait work! Page is in excellent clean bright condition and measures 10 x 13. This is a fabulous piece of photo and Hollywood history sure to thrill the hearts of many a Crawford, Pre-Code, Deco or Steichen fan!
