Description:
Please Mr. Conductor Don't Put Me Off the Train
This
group of four cards is so typical of the tear-jerker that
the Victorians loved. The small drama takes place in a
stage set railway carriage. A boy is discovered not to
have the cost of the fare and when the conductor tries
to put him off the train he offers a sad tale of a dying
mother who's only wish is to see her son again. We see
the scene in a stage set bedroom of the mother and her
doctor. A little girl takes the boys cap, collects the cost
of the fare, and saves the day. Under each picture is a
verse of the song. These were certainly also produced
in magic lantern slides and shown with a singer or as
sing-a-longs with the verses of the song as
accompaniment.
The cards are postally unused but show marks on the
undivided back from being stored in an album. Card
number 4 has a stain below the verse, which shows on
the scan. The
fronts of the cards are well centered but printing on one
of the backs is cut off on the edge of the card and the
type is in slightly different positions on the others. It
appears that the registration was good on the fronts but
the there was some problem with registration during the
printing of the backs. I will send a scan of the backs if
requested. The identification reads Bamforth & Co.,
Publishers, Holmfirth and New York (England).
