Description:
An outstanding Victorian sterling silver liquor flask with allover repousse floral decoration. The oval body is decorated with roses, forget-me-nots and foliage against a stippled background. The sides are decorated with a acanthus leaves, the tip of which curl around to the flat surfaces, created a scalloped border for the primary decorative areas. The cork-lined lid is attached to the flask with a silver chain. The neck is marked “Sterling”, but has no maker’s mark. Until around 1917, many American silversmiths did not mark their names on their wares. Clearly, this piece is by one of the better makers in the Baltimore/New York school of silversmiths, possibly Schofield.
Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, sharp detail, a 1/4" ding on the cap (could be removed by removing the cork lining and hammering from the inside), watertight, cap monogrammed “R.A.S.”. Size: 6” x 3-1/4” x 1-1/2”. Weight: 117.0 grams.
