Description: A phenomenal Staffordshire pottery covered cheese dish in the form of a cow's head. The cream colored body is modeled to represent the cow's fur, and is nicely accented with painted decoration at the eyes, ears, horns and muzzle. The handle and top of the head are decorated with gilt accents. The head rests on the matching underplate. Staffordshire figural cheese keepers are quite rare and this is a terrific example. Origin: England, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, no chips or cracks, gilt border on the underplate is significantly worn, normal glaze crackling. Size: 9-7/8" x 8-1/16" x 7-1/4" high.
