Description:
Extraordinary Victorian sewing or work box--perhaps the best example we've ever seen. The exterior has the most incredible marquetry inlay showing a ferocious lion prowling through a jungle. The marquetry design is surrounded with a burlwood panel edged with parquetry inlay. The sides are inlaid with highly figured woods, as well. The whole is finished with ebonized moulding along the bottom rim and raise on pad feet. The interior of the box retains the original fittings of royal blue velvet and pale blue satin, enhanced with silk trim and gold braid. The fittings include two perfume bottles, pin cushions, an assortment of lidded compartments, and three ivory sewing implements. The interior of the lid retains the original mirror with "stage curtain" trim. Origin: probably English, circa 1850. Condition: the exterior is in excellent condition with no missing inlay; the interior shows the expected wear from use; the lock is functional. Size: 11.5" x 8.5" x 5" tall.
