Description:
This hard to find stand is called a Victorian half commode and would have originally been part of a bedroom set. Its purpose was the gents' washstand or commode and was half the width of a standard washstand - hence the name. They are perfect as end tables in bedroom or living/parlor rooms. Although the stand has both oak and walnut woods, its coloring is more walnut. The marble is original and in very good stable condition. There is an old crack (see picture) from the edge going towards the center. The hand-dovetailed drawer retains its original fancy cast brass pull. Below is a recessed paneled door with its original brass escutcheon and working lock. Inside is a single shelf. The sides of the cabinet also have recessed panels. Even the back is beautifully finished and is meant to be seen as well. The finish is in excellent condition having a warm color and patina.
