Description:
We are very excited to be able to offer for sale this incredible rosewood sofa by John Henry Belter. He had 10 basic designs or patterns he used in his carvings. This design appears to be a variation of the Henry Clay pattern. Belter furniture represents the finest in rococo Victorian furnishings. His rosewood lamination patent allowed him to bend and carve without sacrificing the woods strength and resiliency. The sofa crests have life size realistic roses with open and closed buds. The petals are thin and distinctively arranged. Carved leaves grace the roses and lend to their arrangement. Just below each crest is a spray of additional roses rising between the oval/cameo backs. Notice the strong rosewood graining; and the subtle and thin wood framing encircling each of the ovals. The arms are graceful and have a wonderful flowing quality about them. There are additional carved roses above the front legs where the leg and arm meet. Below the center cameo and on either side is additional carvings, but of realistic and life size pomegranates and leaves. The sofa has a wonderfully curvaceous frame with more carved roses and leaves along the center of the seat rail. The condition of this sofa is incredible with no breaks or missing carvings. The frame is tight and the finish appears original and in excellent condition. The castors are all intact. The fabric has a beautiful floral and bird motif. It is in generally very good condition, but could use a professional cleaning. The tufting is deep and true to the period.
