Description: This fabulous lamp dates from the early twentieth century and depicts the lovely Roman goddess Venus emerging from a shell. Figurine is carved from white marble and the shell and pedestal with wave motif were carved from separate blocks of alabaster stone. Possibly of Italian or French origin. Measures 21.25" high, 15.5" wide and 9" deep and weighs an estimated 40-60 lbs. Wiring is not original and the lamp is in working condition. Fixture accepts a small bulb directly behind the shell with a metal shade to direct the light toward the shell. We have photographed the lamp with and without flash, and the shots with flash simulates the translucent appearance of the shell when the lamp is on. This item resides on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York and may be seen by appointment.
