Description: Vases from Sir Henry Englefield These copperplate engravings, colored at a later date, came from a 1821 edition. They were done by Henry Moses (1782-1870). He was a superb draftsman who was referred to as being one of the best engravers of the day in a 1848 copy of 'The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature'. The collection of vases belonged to Sir Henry Charles Englefield, 1752-1822, who was an antiquary and scientist. He was never married and devoted his entire life to study. In 1778 at the early age of twenty-six he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and in the following year Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In 1781 Englefield, a baronet, joined the Society of Dilettanti which was a society of noblemen and gentlemen which sponsored the study of ancient Greek and Roman art and the creation of new work in the style. It had been founded as a London dining club in 1734 . Englefield acted as its secretary for fourteen years. Besides his antiquarian studies, which resulted in many contributions to "Archaeologia", he carried on research in chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, and geology.
