Description:
Pair of highly unusual cabinet photos of a patented brush drawing machine. One view of the machine shows the stenciled marking on the side of the machine which reads "J. Lewis Brush Drawing Machine Pat. Feb. 3rd '91". The photos were taken by Gilbert & Bacon 1030 Chestnut Street & 820 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photos show the Walter Lewis brush drawing maching which was patented in the U.S. on Feb. 3, 1891. This machine was also patented in Canada later in the year on 4 Dec. of 1891. It is very likely that the photos were specifically taken after 3 Feb. 1891 & before 4 Dec. 1891 as the example of the machine in the pics does not have the later acquired 4 Dec. patent marking.
The photos with mounts measure 6 1/2" long by 4 5/16" wide. T is a tiny crease at the top right corner tip of one card. Otherwise the fronts of the photos are fresh near mint condition. The backs of the cards have slight mounting residue at center.
