Description:
This is a great piece of the early 20th century. This is a lovely piece of a set of refrigerator dishes from Universal Potteries. Many potters made wares specifically for the refrigerator. Some even partnered with appliance makers (Hall China and Westinghouse appliances) and some partnered with Appliance retailers like Sears. Universal made a set of refrigerator dishes to accessorize a Sears refrigerator; it was called Cattails I believe.
As early predecessors to Tupperware, Rubbermaid and Ziploc, these dishes are made of pottery and are quite durable.
This listing is for a canteen-style jug/pitcher. Most often these were used to store water in the fridge.
This jug has wonderful vintage-modern styling. Five (5) horizontal blue bands across the base, a built in stylized handle and a round mouth with pouring spout. The top is a creamy white.
It is marked on the bottom with the Universal Potteries mark.
Dimensions: 8 7/8" tall x 7" wide x 3" deep.
Condition: This pitcher is in good condition. No chips, cracks, or breaks but there are one or two bubbles in the glaze. It does have light crazing, but it is not distracting. Inside is a cork stopper.
