Description: T-14481 Umatilla Apache two sided beaded bag Circa 1910 11" wide be 11 3/4"high plus 7" beaded handle This is a stunning local artisan tribal bag that is intricately beaded on both sides. The interior is a blue cotton plaid with two pockets. The flap on one pocket has a cotton floral. The front of the bag has pale orange luster seed beads with a flower basket filled with beaded flowers in the center The border is a red and turquoise stripe. The flower basket is made of gray steel cut beads. The flowers are orange iridescent with gold centers, red trimmed in orange with yellow, calla lilies are silver steel with yellow centers and white trim with orange stamens. Grey, white flowers trimmed in blue and red with yellow centers trimmed with orange. The foliage is green veined in brown. I can't say enough about how nearly perfect this is. The workmanship is inventive and pristine. Now as we turn the bag over, the background is turquoise iridescent with an Indian maiden in profile in the center. Her face is in clear beads. She has an eye, mouth and eyebrow in appropriate colors. The hair and braids are steel cut black with some iridescent. The dress is red and gold stripe with green trim at the neck. The headband is red with green triangles. The feathers in the headdress are white with gold iridescent tips trimmed in red and gold. She is stunning and perfect. There is not a single missing bead. It is beautiful. This bag is museum quality out of a private New York collection. It should be cherished, appreciated and displayed. This is folk art at it's very best.
