The great art of the Tsogho (Mitsogho, Tsogo) people is well known to specialists, but not the wide audience of collectors, as t is only one small monograph dedicated entirely to their art (in French, c. 1970, by ORSTOM). Yet, the culture and art of the celebrated Fang people cannot be fully understood without an in-depth study of the art and culture of the Tsogho, who influenced the Fang in many ways (the early XX century religion of Bwiti is one such example: born among the Tsogho, it won over much of the Fang). The Tsogho live in Central Gabon in the rain forest surrounding Ogooué or Ogowe , river, c.560 mi (900 km) long, rising on the Batéké Plateau, SW Congo (Brazzaville). It flows NW and W across Gabon to the Gulf of Guinea, near Port-Gentil, w it forms a large delta. The Tsogho neighbor such other celebrated artisan tribes as Kota (Bakota), Ambete, Fang, Vuvi, Aduma, Eshira-Punu, and first of all Mesangho (Sango).H. 47cm.
