Description:
The Kyongdae (Mirror Box) was one of the most prized possessions that a Choson Period new bride brought with her to her husband's household, and one of the most delightful pieces for collectors. It would hold cosmetics, hairpins, combs, trinkets, and in this case, secrets. The mirror is underneath the lid and lifts up, as seen in the second photo This is an especially nice example with some very special touches. It is made entirely of ginkgo. The brass work is very nicely done, with stylized brass peonies for the hinges, and note the lovely curves of the brass heavenly peaches in the front. In Korea, the peony is a powerful symbol of love and prosperity in marriage. T are mirrors on all sides. The front mirror has a beautiful peony carving. T are secret drawers behind this front mirror. This is truly a one-of-a-kind, work-of-art antique Korean Mirror Box. 10.75d x 7.75w x 6.25h inches, 27.5d x 20w x 16h cm.
