Designed and hand-crafted in our European atelier, this exquisite set of three graduating rock crystal candlesticks combines the essential elements of stone, metal, fire and some may even say water. Crowned with Sterling silver mounts the timeless design elegantly unites precious stone with precious metal. The tallest of the candlesticks stands approximately 17" tall.
Few stones inspire the imagination like rock crystal, a gemstone prized for millenniums. This transparent mineral is revered for its beauty as well as its mystical and precious qualities. First thought to be petrified water for its ice like appearance, the stone's distinctive look is both dramatic and mystical. The Chinese and Japanese shared the term "sui ching" for quartz, which means "water essence," the source of peace and power.
Rock crystal is still known as the history stone, an ancient belief that rock crystal holds all the knowledge that ever existed. Gaze into the crystal and divine the future. Clear rock crystals cast a spell, focus upon the spectacular inclusions and set the imagination free. Japanese call crystal tama ("jewel of perfection") a symbol of purity and the infinity of space. Tibetan monks refer to crystal balls as "windows of the gods"; Taoists believe that gazing into the clarity of the crystal "crystallized" one's being. Buddhist altars included quartz spheres as an invocation of the "visible nothingness" that delineates the duality of the material and spiritual world. Thus quartz crystal is considered the "gem of enlightenment."
Our modern candlestick draws on the enduring and precious qualities of both crystal quartz and sterling silver. The luminous mineral crystal bases are made of gemstone quartz, each crystal is carefully selected for its brilliance, fire, clarity and striking interior inclusions. The stone is meticulously cut from a block of natural Brazilian quartz, then skillfully formed, polished and drilled to form the obelisk base.
The obelisk is crowned with a hammered sterling silver mount. The heavy sterling silver is formed by hand to assure the finest quality. Unlike simple cast silver, these sterling pieces are painstakingly hammered, carefully formed by Dutch silversmiths to achieve their extraordinarily sculptural shape. The hammering of the silver, an ancient technique known as "raising", not only forms the metal but also compacts the material so it becomes resilient and much more dense. The result is a strong, beautiful hammered surface that elegantly reflects the light of the flame. The silver bears full sterling hallmarks from The Netherlands.
