THE WORK OF MORE THAN 70 NATIVE ARTISTS who create miniature silver seed pots is presented in this publication of the Norman L. Sandfield Collection at the Heard Museum. The book features color photographs of more than 240 pieces from the Sandfleld collection. Each piece is shown in close detail that reveals what Laguna/Hopi artist Howard Sice refers to as ""the magic of our environment: The photographs accompany artists, author, and collector discussions of each work.

As an art form, these miniatures draw on the ancient tradition of ceramic containers that protected the seeds of agricultural plants on which people's lives depended. Following in the more recent tradition of miniaturization, these silver vessels span primarily from the 1980s to the present and represent the work of some of the finest silversmiths working today. More than 70 silver pots are the creation of award-winning Navajo silversmith Norbert Peshlakai. A few of the other artists included in the collection are White Buffalo (Mike Perez), Ric Charlie, Bernard Dawahoya, Anthony Lovato, Myron Panteah and Darrell Jumbo. This unique collection is the largest and finest of its kind. Author Tricia Loscher interviewed the artists, discussing their approaches to this new art form and the inspiration for their designs. In a foreword by noted Southwestern scholar Martha H. Struever, she describes her involvement with the art form and her introduction of collector Norman L. Sandfield to the beauty in silver miniatures. This introduction led him to create his superb collection. Loscher is the curator and program director of Heard Museum North Scottsdale, Arizona.
