Description: One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. Toy Dogs:… By Lilliam C. Raymond-Mallock [“Lady Betty”, pseud.] Battle Creek, MI: Dogdom Publishing Company, 1907. Tall 12mo., 114pp., + 6p. advertisements, 40 photographs,beige cloth with gilt lettering and illustration of toy spaniels on cover. The History, Points and Standards of English Toy Spaniels, Japanese Spaniels, Pomeranians, Toy Terriers, Pugs, Pekingese, Griffon Bruxellois, Maltese and Italian Greyhounds, with instructive chapters on Breeding, Rearing, Feeding, Training and Showing; and valuable information and treatment in Sickness. J. Kenneth Callahan, in A Directory of Sporting Pen Names, 1995, suggest that the author is/was Lillian C. Smythe, ed. of The Pekingese, q.v! [?] Jones Nº 3918. Franklin Jones Willock bp. [Chicago1960s?] Missing front free endpaper. Tips lightly rubbed. Mr. Fretwell's bookplate on rear fixed endpaper, Franklin Jones Willock heraldic bp on front fixed endpaper, along with Mr. Fretwell's address label. Back hinge is weak. Clifford L. B. Hubbard writes (3 June 1972): “It seems to be quite a rare book: Not in British Museum Library, Not in Chin Collection, Not in [British] Kennel Club Library, Not in Herm David Collection, Not in Massey Catalogue, Not in [John] Marvin Collection, Not in Jones’ Bibliography, Not in Horowitz Collection”.
