Description: One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. Dogs and Their Ancestors. Including the History and Management of Toy Spaniels, Pekingese, Japanese and Pomeranians. By The Hon. Mrs. Neville Lytton. London: Duckworth, 1911. 8vo. 359pp., red cloth with gilt lettering, top edges gilt, four color plates, many b&w illustrations. Appendix. Index. Scarce. By a granddaughter of Lord Byron; authoress of the classic work on horses (as Lady Wentworth). “Followed the trend of the cynological pathfinders in reproducing many of the great paintings and important prints containing evidence of the antiquity of the miniature breeds, and in its specialist field still remains a standard work on Toy Dogs of British and foreign extraction.” –Clifford. L. B. Hubbard, The Literature of the British Dog, 1949. “....a scarce and very important Dog Book. This is a better produced volume than the American edition of the same year; the illustrations are guarded, i.e., not bound in with the pages, but mounted on stubs ”. –Gerald Massey, A Show Catalogue of Dog Books, Paintings & Prints, 1945. A scarce and important work. For further insight see Clifford L. B. Hubbard’s “A Book At Random” Nº 56, Kennel Gazette, CXX Nº 1424 (October 1999) 64-65. 8vo. Jones’4 Nº 3915.
