Description: This is a rare 1/9th plate tintype showing an American Indian in western clothing with an Indian saddle blanket wrapped around him. This was probaley a school portrait. In the 19th century a large number of plains Indians were sent off to American schools to become more "civilized" in the western culture. I don't doubt for one moment that is the case with this subject. The portrait is housed in a very rare George Washington embossed leather case. Fresh to the market.
