Description:
LARGE THAI ANTIQUE GILT WOOD RECLINING SCULPTURE OF THE BUDDHA
A beautiful and impressive hand-carved wooden reclining figure of the historical Buddha. In the reclining position, the most unusual of the three classic positions of the Buddha (the other two being sitting and standing), the Buddha lies on his right side with his head resting on his hand. This reclining position symbolizes the precise moment that the Buddha enters Nirvana, or Enlightenment (Parinirvana). The lovely and serene countenance on this sculpture is certainly a tribute to the artist, as it superbly mirrors the ultimate state of peaceful bliss achieved by the Buddha as he attains the final state of cosmic consciousness (see close-up of face).
This Buddha has inlaid ivory eyes and is in very good condition for his age of over 100 years. He is clad in gracefully flowing robes decorated with low-relief carved borders and inset ornamentation. He is gilt overall, under which is a layer of black lacquer. He is approximately 44" long by 11" high (to top of head) by 12" deep. Please feel free to ask for additional photos of any of our pieces.
