Description:
Terracotta Roof Finial ( Epi de faitage) , France, late 19th or early 20th century. Eache of the four sides is decorated with a very detailed lions head in high relief accented by beutiful coloration and frip glazing. Craquelure of glaze, chipping and condition appropriate to age and use. The top finial is a replacement one, I believe, but was done quite a while in the past. It is firmly fixed to the epi. These pieces are extremely rare to find, as they are pieces avidly sought by collectors. This one is from Caen, and is marked with the makers stamp on one corner face. Olive green glaze with emerald green and umber drip glazes. The top finial is glazed a lovely mustard color with orange and yellow ochre drip glazes. Ready to place on your roof or to use as a lovely decorative item! These pieces are rare to find for sale in any condition, and this one is in very good and useable condition.
