Description: Beautifully engraved certificate from the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company issued in 1899 to Henry C. Clews & Co., N.Y. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a train and men working in a mine. This item is hand signed by the Company’s President and Secretary and is over 104 years old. The certificate is handsigned by Henry C. Clews on the verso. Please note that this signature has been verified to be from Henry Clews and can be identified with the letter "C" that looks like "@".
Certificate Vignette
Back of Certificate Henry Clews was born in the United States on 14th August, 1834. He became a clerk in an import house but by 1860 was the owner of Livermore, Clews & Mason, an investment company in Wall Street. During the American Civil War Clews helped the government to sell bonds to finance its increased spending. When Ulysses Grant (1869-1877) was president, Clews provided him with business and economic advice. Clews held conservative economic views and was a strong opponent of the trade union movement. He organized the firm of Henry Clews & Company in 1877, its members pledging themselves never to take any speculative risk. He was a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines. Author: "Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street," "The Wall Street Point of View." Henry Clews died on 31st January, 1923. Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company History Beginning in the 1870's, blast furnace complexes spread throughout north Alabama, supplied with raw materials from nearby iron ore and coal mines. 1881 The Tennessee Coal and Railroad Co. was renamed to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co. in 1881. The Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company was one of the largest industrial firms in the Birmingham area. Ultimately, the company was acquired by U.S. Steel in a merger in 1907 which was approved by Teddy Roosevelt when he was duped during the panic of 1907 by J. P. Morgan.
