Description:
A rare complete 12 piece set of Tang dynasty marbled-glass zodiac figurines, ca.AD618-906. Glass was argumentatively first created in China during the 5th-4th century B.C. Glass forming techniques had evolved to quite a high level during the 6th century AD. The Tang craftsman were very skilled and inventive with modelling glass and was first in the world to create a variated form of glass we call marbled. The set is comprised of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals: rooster, rodent, rabbit, ram, snake, monkey, bull, dog, dragon, horse, pig, and tiger. All the figurines are of the relative same size and believed to be of an original set. Dimensions each figure vary from approximately 4" long (dragon) to approximately 2-1/4" tall (snake). Each figurine was hand-formed and not moulded. You can see this clearly in the "pulled" appendages. Depending on the piece, the variated colors range in hues of beige, black, red, and white. The complete set was excavated from a single tomb in Northern China. The rare set is in excellent condition without any damage or repair. We have handled a few sets of Tang, Han and Song zodiac figures, (mostly in earthenware), but we have to say that this is the finest set we have seen or handled so far. This is truly a rare set to behold.
