Description: A fine Tang dynasty LushanYao blackish-brown glaze with cream/rbrown splashed vase/jar, ca. A.D.618-906. Dimensions are 7-1/2" tall, 6-1/2" diameter. LushanYao kilns began during the Tang dynasty and were finally closed in the late Southern Song dynasty. Tang Lushan ewers differ from the later Song versions by being shorter and without an etched shoulder band. Renown for their opaque dark brown glazes with irridescent cream, brown and/or blue splashes. The Lushan potters would apply the thinner dark brown glaze first and then add the second, thick and irredescent color glaze where desired and fire. The second irredescent glaze colors would run and blend with the underlying brown glaze, creating a wonderful splashed effect. This ewer is short and stout with a broad body with a double-looped handle and broad neck with a wide flaring mouth rim. The ewer stands on a short squared foot with a shallow concave foot center. The foot is beige and a burnt-orange. The overall condition consensus is very good with even glaze wear and several chips to the foot rim.
