Description:
I believe that this is a Kinkozan Satsuma Vase of the Awata school. This may date from the mid 1800's but was made until about 1927 although I am told that the later pieces were called Kyoto Satsuma and was covered with a blaze of color and heavily gilded. This piece is more subtle in its color combinations and design motifs, many of which I have seen in pictures of the mid 1800's Kinkozan. This measures 15' tall and just over 4 1/8" in diameter. The design consists of flowers and brown sparrow-like flying birds. There is a yarrow shaped flower that is decorated in gold and in other places one can see random flecks of gold. Many of the flowers, leaves and other parts of the design are outlined in black. Near the top of the vase on either side is a rather weird curly haired, monkey faced head holding a large ring in its mouth. It is much like the ring in a bull's nose only much larger in comparison and coming from below the nose area through what looks like would be the mouth. These pieces were made separately and attached to the vase. They were hollow and have an air hole beneath the chin. The hair, eyebrows, face, whiskers below the chin and the ring were all decorated in gold although much has worn off, especially on the rings. The eyes are blue, outlined in black, slanted up and absolutely evil in demeanor. The piece is all over crazed as one would expect on high quality Satsuma. There are no chips, cracks, or other damage to this fine vase. I am using the 1981 copy of A Treasury of Satsuma by Sandra Andacht so you probably are getting a great deal. Happy Collecting !!!!
