We have for sale a vintage (early to mid 20th century) wood carving of a Japanese Sumo wrestler man, sitting cross-legged and doubled over either in prayer or defeat. The carving measures 5 1/4 inches high, 5 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches front to back. I'm not familiar with the type of wood, but it has a very unique multi-shade grain, ranging from a darker sort of purplish brown to a paler golden brown, the surface having little pores. The piece is unsigned, but has been carved with considerable skill, with great detail to the muscles and bone structure. The feet underneath are outsized in proportion to the rest of the carving, but were carved to provide a steady base for the rest of the piece. There are a couple of light surface scratches, nothing that would detract. Underneath are some short, shallow knife marks. Overall good to very good condition and a great item to add to a collection of Asian art objects. Buy it now!
