Description:
THE STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO - a classic of English children's literature written by Helen Bannerman for her own children back home while she was on a long train ride to India. Also, she did the original illustrations for the story. Soon after returniing to England, she was persuaded to publish the story and the first edition was published in London in 1899. The first American edition was published in New York in 1901. Other editions followed in Chicago, London, Philadelphia and New York. This Altemus edition was published in Philadelphia ca 1925.Included in the 64 pages are the 27 original illustrations. "Collected Books" by Allen & Patricia Ahern, 2002 edition, lists the first London edition of Little Black Sambo at a value of $12,500 and a 1936 American edition at $750. This copy measures 5 1/ 2" tall by 4 1/4"wide.
