Siam or Thailand
Thailand, once named Siam, is the world's 50th largest country in terms of total area (slightly smaller than Yemen and slightly larger than Spain), with a surface area of approximately 198,000 sq mi, and the 21st most-populous country, with approximately 63 million people. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth king of the House of Chakri, as the ruling monarch. The King has reigned for more than half a century, making him the longest reigning Thai monarch and the longest reigning current monarch in the world. Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized by a European power.

The country's official name was Siam until June 23, 1939, when it was changed to Thailand. The region known as Thailand has been inhabited by humans since the paleolithic period, about 10,000 years ago. Prior to the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 13th century, various states thrived there, such as the various Tai, Mon, Khmer and Malay kingdoms, as seen through the numerous archaeological sites and artifacts that are scattered throughout the Siamese landscape. Prior to the 12th century however, the first Thai or Siamese state is traditionally considered to be the Buddhist kingdom of Sukhothai, which was founded in 1238.

And the next time you serve rice with a meal, think of Thailand, because they are the world’s largest exporter of rice.

Niello jewelry
Siamese silver jewelry found today in the collectable market is mostly “niello” or “nielloware” style, created by carving out areas of the silver. The design often displays Mekkala, the Goddess of Lightning, and represents the Thai version of Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic from a Hindu religious tale, which had a profound impact on art and culture of Thailand. This design with a contrast of colors between the black field and highlighted silver is usually a typical, unique, distinctive look of Siamese silver jewelry, as is shown in most pieces.

Niello is a black metallic alloy of sulfur, copper, silver, and usually lead, used as an inlay on engraved metal. It can be used for filling in designs cut from metal. The Egyptians are credited with originating niello decoration, which spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.

The technique is as follows: The artisan would carve a particular character or pattern into the silver, leaving the figure raised by carving out the "background". He would then use the niello inlay to fill in the "background". After being baked in an open fire, the alloy would harden. It would then be sanded smooth and buffed. Finally, a silver artisan would add minute details by hand. Filigree was often used for additional ornamentation.

Sterling silver
Pure Silver has a brilliant white metallic luster. It is very ductile and malleable below gold and palladium (one of the platinum metals). Sterling silver is the standard for beautiful, high quality silver jewelry being over 90% pure silver mixed with alloys to add strength and durability. The metal will not wear down. Sterling silver is 92.5% (925 parts) pure silver and 7.5% (75 parts) alloy metal.

Marks used, engraved onto either the back side or the inside of each piece of jewelry include “sterling“, “ster.”, 925, or .925 and 92.5. Sterling Silver has the most ideal percentage of metal for having durability and natural bright sheen and the patina adheres to polish bringing the beautiful jewelry piece back to its original appearance when new.
