We are pleased to offer this beautiful Sterling silver Southwestern turquoise choker.

This necklace weighs approximately 76.6 grams, and it measures about 15” long. The stones are cabochon cut, roughly oval in shape, and bezel set. They are graduated in size from about 8.81mm by 11.71mm to 18.82mm by 29.23mm. They are aqua with a black matrix that shows through as very distinctive black veining. They appear to be Bisbee turquoise (See below) from the Bisbee Copper mine in Bisbee, Arizona.

Our jeweler informs us that the metal is sterling silver. There are 11 stones in all, each is nestled into the surrounding silver beads, and they are each connected to one another with common round links. The choker has a lobster claw clasp to insure against loss during activities. The only hallmark found on this piece is “Edith,” and we don’t know who this artisan is.

These outstanding turquoise stones capture the excitement as well as the palette of the season with their color and striking abstract patterns. The aqua hue has a bright and colorful saturation that will dazzle you. Don’t let this great find get away.

Nothing finishes your look as much as eye-catching and beautiful jewelry. While fashions in clothing change each season according to the whims of designers and clothing manufacturers and the fad du jour, beautiful jewelry is here to stay forever. Turquoise
Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gem and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue. In recent times turquoise, like most other opaque gems, has been devalued by the introduction of treatments, imitations, and synthetics onto the market, so the natural stones, such as these, are a nice treat.

Turquoise Bisbee
Bisbee Blue or Bisbee turquoise refers to the turquoise that comes from copper mines located in the vicinity of Bisbee, Arizona. Though small amounts were found in the Campbell shaft mine, as well as in streambeds in the Mule Mountains, the vast majority of Bisbee turquoise surfaced when the Phelps Dodge Corporation started open pit mining operations at the location now known as the Lavender Pit, especially the eastern side of the pit. Large amounts of a conglomerate rock bed needed to be removed before the copper ore located more deeply could be reached. This conglomerate "waste" rock was the host for most of the turquoise, both in vein and nugget form.

During the time that the largest quantities of turquoise were being extracted from the mine, the company made no organized effort to recover it. It simply got loaded into large dump trucks and hauled off to the "dumps". During this time (primarily from the late 1950s to the late 1960s), almost all recovered turquoise was obtained by company employees taking it home in their lunch boxes, etc. Though this activity was prohibited, the prohibition was rarely enforced. For several years (mostly the early to late 1970s), these individuals, locally known as "dumpers", were the only source for this fine turquoise. Also, during this time, Phelps Dodge leased out the dumps to an individual to mine the dumps for turquoise.

Sterling silver
Sterling silver is a white and highly reflective precious metal. Sterling refers to silver that is 92.5 percent pure, which should be stamped on the metal as Sterling, 925 or .925, sometimes accompanied by the initials of the designer or country of origin as a hallmark.
