Popular from the 1950s into the 1970s, the silver and black Thai jewelry pieces were produced by many jewelry shops. Called "Niello" or "Nielloware", this jewelry is created by carving a design in the Sterling Silver. The carved sections are then filled with a sulfur/metals powder, and baked. The most popular design is of Mekkala, the Goddess of Lightning, who represents the Thai version (The Ramakien) of the Buddhist and Hindu Indian legend, Ramayama, about a prince, his wife, his parents (King and Queen of Siam), and the evil king of Ceylon.
This jewelry was often sent to the wives or girlfriends of American soldiers stationed in Viet Nam or Thailand during the Viet Nam conflict period.
Sterling silver is a white and highly reflective precious metal. Sterling refers to silver that is 92.5 percent pure, which should be stamped on the metal, sometimes accompanied by the initials of the designer or country of origin as a hallmark. Although less durable than stainless steel and other precious metals, sterling silver is often employed in watches that coordinate or look like sterling jewelry.
