Excellent condition We are pleased to offer this beautiful sterling silver set Flow Blue pottery pendant necklace.
This necklace weighs approximately 15.5 grams, and is a beautifully crafted pendant that features Flow Blue pottery (See below) cut into a large almost oval shape and set in sterling silver. It forms a picture that was probably the edge of a greater picture depicting a marshy area, because this piece seems to have cattails.
This pendant is an example of Flow Blue cobalt blue on white pottery that was exceptionally popular in England first, then in the Americas in the mid and late 1700’s.
This piece measures about 2 1/8” without the bail, 2 ¾” with the bail, and about 1 ¼” wide. It is slightly curved and is a really lovely pendant. The chain is from Italy and is also 925 sterling silver. It measures about 20” long and has a lobster claw clasp to keep it secure. All of it is in excellent condition.

Flow Blue Pottery
In the mid-1700's, the process of transfer printing of the applied designs and pictures was invented. The application of transfer printing to the blue and white English earthenware was first accomplished at the Worcester factory in the 1760's. The process of transfer printing, where the same design could be economically applied to any number of pieces, and the perfecting of the Chinese underglazing of the deep blue cobalt oxide brought about a revolution in the English ceramics industry.
It was in the midst of this revolution that Flow Blue was born. Great care was needed to keep the borders of the transfer patterns' seams from becoming overly obvious and unattractive. The idea of flowing the blue over these areas was employed to hide these flaws (in addition to hiding mold flaws, glaze defects, etc.). This motif went very well with the "Oriental" flavor that most blue and white china hoped to capture. A sort of misty, mysterious quality was lent to the underlying patterns and pictures. This of course matched the era's growing fascination with all things Oriental. (Information taken from Flow Blue internet site.)
Sterling silver
Sterling silver is a white and highly reflective precious metal. Sterling refers to silver that is 92.5 percent pure, which should be stamped on the metal as Sterling, 925, or .925, sometimes accompanied by the initials of the designer or country of origin as a hallmark.
