Description:

A stereoview of a parade in Watertown, Wisconsin circa 1885. A man on horseback ls show in front of a marching band. Many of the men carry wind instruments. One instrument appears to be a French horn. It wraps around the man's body. There appear to be trumpets and tubas. A drum can be seen. The rest of the parade can be seen marching down the street behind the band. Out on the sidewalk in front of a storefront on the left side is a cigar store indian. This measures about 1/4" including the base in the photo. We have provided an enlargement of this detail. The stereoview is printed on the left margin with the photographer's information, "Jno. B. May, Artistic Portrait and Landscape Photographer" and on the right margin, "Views of Watertown & Vicinity." On the back is printed a list of the views of Watertown, Wisconsin & vicinity that the photographer has issued.
The list of views, of which this view is one, is as follows:
Concordia Island Park
Rork River near Park
Fountain and Pavilion, Concordia Island Park
Main St. looking East
Main St. looking West
Main St. Floral Arches and decorations during 12th Saengerfest, held June 26th to 29th, 1885
Rock River from Main St. Bridge. South, North
Fourth St. Artch, fronting Turner Hall, looking South.
Panoramic Views of City from City Hall.

The stereoview measures 7" long by 3 15/16" high. This view is very similar but not identical to another view . The parade may be part of the celebration of "Saengerfest" which is a German cultural festival of singing and music.

The precise condition of the stereoview should be easy to figure out from the pics. We estimate this photo to have been made in 1885 or shortly there after.
