Description:
This Bird on a Gourd Planter by Pennsbury Pottery is also often
called "slick chick." It is pictured on page 156 of Mike
Schneider's book "Stangl and Pennsbury Birds." The bird is a
pretty yellow color with black features and it is sitting atop a
green gourd. The gourd has a nice streaked green patterned
glaze and is open on two sides for the little planter. The few
birds on gourds made by Stangl were usually marked on the
bottom, but the Pennsbury birds, like this one, were almost
always unmarked."
Research tells me that
Pennsbury Pottery was started in 1950 by Henry and Lee Below,
husband & wife and former Stangl Pottery employees. They were
in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, directly across the Delaware River
from the Trenton, New Jersey, home of Stangl. Most of the
Pennsbury birds were produced from 1950 through about 1955.
After that they were made only by special order. The company
went out of business in the early 1970's. This piece is in good
condition with no damage to report. Collectors will enjoy this cute
little planter. Check my inventory for a very early Stangl bird and
other pottery pieces. This item will be shipped from Texas.
It can be combined with other items shipped from Texas to save
on postage.
