Description: Staffordshire pottery spill vase, modeled as a colourful bird beside its nest of speckled eggs, the trunk of a tree rising above to form the vase opening.
Circa 1860.

Spills were the long twisted pieces of paper used to light fires, lamps, etc. in the Victorian Era. These vases were a decorative way to store them in plain view without looking messy.
