Description: Solomon C. Spring was born on January 29th, 1826 in Granby, Connecticut. Early in his life, he was employed in the clock shop of Silas Burnham Terry. Spring then moved to Bristol, Connecticut where he worked as a clockmaker for the Rev. Irenus Atkins owner of the Atkins Clock Company. In 1864, at the age of 38, he bought the land and buildings of the old Birge, Peck and Company (clock makers) in Bristol and renamed it the S.C. SPRING CLOCK COMPANY. The company never issued a catalogue so its hard to know how many styles they made. Most of their clocks were sold to other clock manufacturers, so to find one with the S.C. Spring label in the case is a wonderful "find" indeed !!! Spring retired in 1895 and died in 1906 after producing some excellent and very attractive clocks. This example of his work includes an intact label which although it is flaked, retains the full S.C. Spring Clock Company Bristol, Connecticut imprint(see photograph). The case is in a wonderful state of preservation and features faux marble columns with their original gilded sections. The veneer graining is bold and nothing short of spectacular!! The painted dial has been cleaned and the movement was recently completely serviced, polished and put into perfect operating condition. The Victorian lady on the reverse-painted lower door glass reflects the type of work that was popular in that day. We set the price low for this excellent clock and it will surely grace any mantle or clock shelf on which it is displayed. NOTE: As an added bonus, a complimentary copy of the February 1978 Bulletin of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WATCH AND CLOCK COLLECTORS in which there is an extensive article detailing and illustrating the life and work of Solomon C. Spring, will be included with the clock to its next owner.
