One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England. Tall 12mo., 530pp., plus 32p. advertising, dark brown blind-stamped cloth with gilt spine lettering, taupe endpapers, colored frontispiece, 140 engravings from ancient manuscripts. Index. Dogs mentioned in various chapters and there are references to bull baiting, bear baiting, dog fighting and the Bulldog. First published in 1801. Several later editions. “Although Strutt is not overly reliable as regards dogs, his work has been a favorite with researchers since it first appeared in 1801.” Jones’4 Nº 1199. Spine has faded, extreme head and tail have closed tears, Mr. Fretwell's bookplate on front fixed endpaper, edges roughly cut. Nice and tight, with clean interior. VG. [FF1908-120] [DT65]
