Description:
What a unique and folksy desk/secretary. This handmade secretary has some wonderful one of a kind features. It appears to be made up of 3 separate pieces. The top section is made of solid cherry and has a wonderful cut out and applied bold cornice. The recessed paneled doors have their original cast iron latches. Inside the doors are 2 shelves and a storage box with door. Oddly the only way to open the small door is by pressing the release button with a slim object such as a knife blade. Check out the shapely cut out below the doors. The oak center section appears to be a spool cabinet with a lift up leather top writing surface. Notice the small shelf with ink well and cubbies towards the back. The lift top opens to reveal a narrow storage compartment for papers, etc. There are 4 small drawers below with applied panels on the drawer fronts and their original brass knobs. The original cabinetmaker obviously designed and made the secretary using the spool cabinet as the central piece adding the top and base to house the desk. Check out the repeated cut out shapes on the base and the same style doors. Inside is one shelf. Another wonderful feature is the swing out brass lamp on the side. The lamp was originally kerosene and later converted to electric. The lamp's arm allows the lamp to move 180 degrees to provide light to the writing surface. Even the sides of the base cabinet have applied decorations. Was this originally a country storeowner's desk? Great thought, practicality and a little whimsy went into its design. The finish is original and has a wonderful crazed and warm finish.
