Description:
Edwin R. Hodgman was a minister in Westford, Massachusetts in the mid-1800s and author of several books, including A Brief Memoir of Rev. Joseph Bancroft Hill (1864) and History of the Town of Westford in the County of Middlesex (1883).
Dated Feb. 3, 1860, this three-page, 8” x 5”, autograph letter signed is written to Amos H. Hosmer of Mason, New Hampshire. In part: “I send you by the hand of my son, a small book entitled “The Victory Won:” a brief memorial of the last days of G.R. I think you will find it an instructive narrative. Its perusal has affected me very much. The display of God’s grace in the conversion of G.R. is truly wonderful. And the strong faith of the invalid through those long months of languishing and distress is another proof among many which we have, that God “giveth power to the faith and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Isa. 40:29.
“…May you have experiences similar to those of ‘G.R.’ As you approach the unseen world, may the light from above shine brighter and brighter upon you…Oh, how precious is his love – his assurances ‘I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.’ Yes, my dear brother, he will be near you. And he will come to you when you stand upon the brink of the grave…You expect soon to ‘see him as he is.’ How glorious will that vision be! You will see him in his essential divinity, and will be employed in praising him for his redeeming mercy to you. I almost wish I could go to that world soon…We will meet in the morning.” More.
Comes with unstamped cover delivered by Hodgman’s son. Letter is in excellent condition and a wonderful example of spiritual writing in the mid-19th century.
