Description:
I would date this stunning desk-top accessory to the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century.
The portfolio has quite clearly been left in it's original box for the last 90 to 100 years, it looks almost untouched. The leather is heavily embossed in gold surrounding the central panel which is silk. This looks to have had a background printed onto the silk and then hand embroidered .. simply stunning.
The interior has many pages of blotting paper, all original and hardly used. At the back there is a concertina portfolio with three compartments embossed Papeles Varios, which I think translates to Various Papers; Contestadas / To be replied to; Recibidas / Receipts; forgive me if my translations are inaccurate!
There is a dip pen to the side and the back panel has been embroidered with two initials.
Complete with the original box which is in fairly good shape. The blotter is in wonderful condition with just a few scratches to the leather. Measures 11 1/2" x 8 1/2".
