Description: Spanish Colonial dressed Jesus Christ Cross Figure - Colonial Polychrome Statuary Lovely Jesus Christ Crucified- Circa XVIII Century- Wood and gesso (indigenous technique) polichromed. This image is a Burgos Christ or Saint Agustin Christ, who was often sculpted and then dressed. Religious figures were brought to the West during colonial times and quickly became an important part of daily life in the Spanish speaking Americas. Local artists were encouraged to make these figures to fill an ever growing local demand for them. Freestanding images of Christ, saints, and the Holy Family, were believed by European missionaries to facilitate devotion and were closely patterned after Spanish models. At times the figures were dressed in actual clothes. Size is: 15.25" - 39 cm. tall by 8.25" - 21 cm. across Condition: Some areas have worn paint with the wood or gesso showing through.
